چکیده

CASE HISTORY A 1-year-old female Boer goat from the Molecular Biology sect ion of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (OVI) was brought to the post mortem room for euthanasia. It was weak and recumbent. The goat had been 1 of a group of 38 goats in a heartwater experiment. They had been at Onderstepoort for 3 months. Other than deworming and vaccination against Pasteurella and bluetongue that all the animals had received, this goat does not appear to have received any other treatment. It had not shown any abnormalities throughout the 3-month period that the group was at Onderstepoort, and the problem with the neck was noticed just 1 day before euthanasia was requested. The goat stopped eating and it was assumed that it had hurt its neck. On physical examination, it was noticed that the slightest pressure on the 1st cervical vertebra, the atlas, was extremely painful for the goat. It vigorously resisted handling in that area by moving its head and neck, and bleating loudly.

Diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention of infections caused by Rhodococcus equi in foals.

Rhodococcus equi, a gram-positive facultative intracellular pathogen, is one of the most common causes of pneumonia in foals. On farms where the disease is endemic, costs associated with morbidity and mortality ...

The clinical manifestations of R. equi infection are diverse, although 80% of patients have some pulmonary involvement. The...

Non-pulmonary Rhodococcus equi infections in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Rhodococcus equi, formerly known as Corynebacterium equi, was isolated repeatedly from the blood of two patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Neither of the patients had pneumonia while they were bacteraemic, whereas pneumonia has been present in all previously reported cases of human infection with R equi. One of our patients had diarrhoea and the organism was isolated ...
